2019 4-H Shooting Sports Texas Team

The 2019 Texas Team
This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. Originally held in San Antonio, Texas in 2000, the event has travelled throughout parts of Texas and into other states. Nebraska has hosted this event eight times since its start in 2000. This June, shooting sports teams from across the country will gather in Grand Island, Nebraska to compete for the 5' tall trophy and become the National Champs!

Last weekend each of Texas' nine discipline teams gathered at the 4-H Center in Brownwood for their "Rendezvous." The Texas Team is comprised of 45 4-Hers, including alternates, representing 26 counties in the state. The team came together to meet their fellow teammates, practice for their events, and go over logistics for Nationals. We are so proud and excited to have these 4-Hers represent the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports program this summer. Special thanks to all the parents and coaches!
A list of the 2019 Team members can be found here.

Important Announcement--2015 Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Teams Selection

Selection of the 2015 Texas Teams for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational

After much consideration from various perspectives, it has been determined that selection of the 2015 Texas Teams for the National Invitational will not be done by qualification using any of the events of the 2014 Texas 4-H Shooting Sports State Games.  The selection process will remain an open application process for enrolled 4-H members who meet the basic requirements.  This application process will be announced sometime during the late summer so that completed applications can be submitted early in the 2014/2015 4-H year.

Announcement of the application timeline and process will be distributed to AgriLife Extension County and District Offices, posted on the 4-H Shooting Sports Website, blog, facebook page, and announced via the text message/email update system. Signing up for text/email updates will alert you the moment the information is available.  See below for links to all of these information outlets.

Texas 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Program in 2012-2013

The 2012-2013 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Program, known as WHEP, finished another good year.

This year offered two Practice Contests, one each in Kerrville and Centerville, which served as training grounds for youth and adult leaders alike.  These contests are abbreviated versions of a typical contest that give insight into the operation and set up of a contest.  In addition, the official answers and explanations to each contest event are provided immediately following an activity.  These are not only explained but discussed with all participants encouraged to ask questions.  Look for Practice Contests for the coming year on November 23rd in Grayson County and January 18th in Brazos County.

A special WHEP session is also scheduled during the 4-H Teen Retreat at the Texas 4-H Center on January 10-12.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo WHEP Contest was presented in fair weather this year, which is always a 50/50 chance in coastal Texas March.  The contest will take place again in 2014 on March 8th.

This year's State WHEP Contest was held at the Texas 4-H Office in College Station utilizing the Urban section of the manual and testing the knowledge of the participants' urban wildlife management skills.  The 2014 State Contest is scheduled for June 14-15 in Brazos County.

The results of the 2013 contest are as follows (see complete participant results on the WHEP webpage):

Junior Division
1st Individual - Reid Aschenbeck, Washington County
2nd Individual - Cade Weiss, Washington County
3rd Individual - Logan Schwartz, Washington County
1st Team - Washington County

Intermediate Division
1st Individual - Hayden Mathews, Comal County
2nd Individual - Davis Mathews, Comal County
3rd Individual - Deidra Davis, Comal County
1st Team - Comal County
2nd Team - Denton County
3rd Team - Washington County

Senior Division
1st Individual - Reagan Ashley, Cameron County
2nd Individual - D.J. Franklin, Waller County
3rd Individual - Catherin Franklin, Waller County
1st Team - Waller County
2nd Team - Cameron County

The National WHEP Invitational is attended by the top placing Senior team from each state.  The Waller County Team (pictured above) of Coach Harvey Laas, Catherin Franklin, D.J. Franklin, Joseph Franklin, and Sam Franklin, represented Texas 4-H in the 2013 Invitational in Indiana.  This team honored Texas 4-H by bringing home 2nd Place Overall!

2013 4-H Shooting Sports National Invitational - Texas Wins Again

Since 2000 and the inception of the 4-H Shooting Sports National Invitational, Texas 4-Hers have brought home the 5' tall traveling trophy for overall champions all but one year.  The 2013 Texas Team continued those efforts in June by bringing the trophy home one more year from this year's event.  The 2013 Texas Team was comprised of 43 4-Hers, including alternates, representing 25 counties in the state.  The effort continues to become more and more of a challenge each year.  Texas had a couple of competitive states close on their heels this year.
The Texas Team is nominated each year by an application and selection process measuring not only their participation levels in 4-H Shooting Sports events and activities but also their involvement in 4-H in general, their involvement in their communities, and their ability to answer tough pertinent questions related to youth development.  Participation in a 4-H Shooting Sports Project is mandatory however.  Applications for the 2014 Texas Team will be released this fall.
The 5' traveling trophy will be making its way across the state stopping in each of the Texas Team members' counties for a week or two stay.  Be on the lookout for it in your area.
